FRESNO STATE vs. UCLA

Last weekend was a good weekend to be Bulldog fan. The Fresno State football team is famous for being successful enough to have its fans to the point where they can think of little else... and then to take it all away from you and break your heart. With the exception of one game this year thus far, that has not happened. So a group of us headed down to Pasadena and the Rose Bowl this past weekend (The Minnicks let us jump in with them) to catch the Bulldog vs Bruin game. On the way into the stadium, I overheard a crazy UCLA fan, amazed at the number of fans at their home stadium wearing red say, "who are these people?" When her husband responded, "They must all be Fresno State fans", she then asks, "Where the heck is Fresno?" Her husband then replies, "I think it is in California". What? I had to shake my head.

Nevertheless, our hopes were high, the Fresno State fans were out in force and the weather was a hot 96 degrees. There were actually close to 20,000 Fresno State fans, making it almost feel like a home game.

Matt was so excited, he couldn't keep his mouth closed.

Kelly and Julio got the most die hard fan award for bringing baby Lucy with them to the game. Julio had a great time with Lucy (mostly outside of the stadium to keep her happy) throughout the game.

Here are some big fat guys with really hairy backs that were sitting in front of us. I admire their courage and yes, sadly I can relate.

Final score: Fresno State 36, UCLA 31. Bet that crazy UCLA fan knows where Fresno is from now!

Doug, Rick and Michelle, what can I say? You gave it your best, you really did. Sometimes your best is just not good enough.

Soakin it all in

So Fresno is going crazy right now over the baseball teams national championship. Matt and I are trying to soak the experience in as much as possible because who knows when it will happen again. What better way then to take the kids with Mom and Dad to the welcome home parade held at the campus. Even better, I think that the rest of Fresno feels the same way. I've never seen so many happy people at any gathering, it was like it was christmas morning for the town of Fresno.

Emma and Maddy made a great sign to show the players. Coach Batesole got all the people in his cart to check it out. It was a very proud moment for Matt. The photographer for Fresno Magazine stopped to take a few pictures of the kids and get names.
Hopefully we'll see them in next month's issue.

There was quite a large group there. The crowd got quite a bit thicker closer to the stadium.

And I thought I was a fan. This guy got a tattoo (apparently sometime last night) that he was very proudly displaying for the players as they came past. I'm not sure what to say about that... (actually I think his kids faces say it all)

The kids (and the Dad's) thought it was pretty cool to see the team as they came by.

College World Series Most Outstanding Player Tommy Mendonca in the front and game hero last night Steve Detwiler right behind him.

My Dad took our family when I was around seven to the last big parade Fresno had when the basketball team won the NIT. I vaguely remember the experience. Hopefully we'll have more of these experiences in the years to come, in the mean time were trying to enjoy the moment and hope we don't have to wait as long for the next one.

Oh and for Kristen and Julio, yes you will be hearing about this for the rest of your life. Shoulda been a Bulldog!

Gotta Love Those Dogs!

Being a Fresno State fan is not always easy. Matt and I have often said over the years that the bulldogs are the only thing that ever broke our hearts. That was not the case today. Today was a great day, the greatest day ever to be a Bulldog fan. Lowest seed in NCAA history to win a championship IN ANY SPORT. Incredible. My favorite quote of the night came from pitcher Justin Wilson,

"Cinderella? This wasn't about Cinderella. This was about the Bulldogs".

Thank you Bulldogs for the great ride.

Bulldog Basketball - our 1st game of the season

Jeremy's brother, Matt, scored 4 free tickets to the Fresno State Basketball game last night. The Bulldogs vs. Fresno Pacific Sunbirds. My mom, Grandma Elizabeth, came over and took the kids out to dinner and then offered to babysit while we went to the game. Man she's awesome! We got there late and left early, but still had plenty of time to enjoy the game and the people watching (I mostly watch the people - they are infinitely more fascinating than watching boys throw a ball around!)

Here we are pretending we're on the
"Kiss Cam".

This is Matt and Aimee (I guess I should've asked them before I posted their cute faces on the internet... oops! You guys don't mind, right?)

So Aimee has declared that Hector Hernandez #21 is my special buddy - my "boyfriend" as she calls him. We all have to have a favorite player and he gets to be mine. That's him below. He did a very nice job last night scoring lots of 3 pointers just for me! Or maybe those were for the team?
Aimee was still undecided on her favorite player she was debating between 2 guys. Who's your favorite?

So I'm pretty sure they won - we left when the Bulldogs had a pretty good lead. Ok. I'll check their website and find out for sure.

Thanks, Matt and mom for a fun free date night!

gobulldogs.com said the final score was 87-68. Go Dogs.
