So we visited Valley Children's yesterday to have them look at Lizzie's broken pinky toe. They x-rayed her foot one more time and decided not to reset it - thank heavens! The doctor at urgent care did a pretty good job of that. They also decided to put her in a walking cast for one month.
Here she is BEFORE. Lizzie is looking a little rough due to the fact that she spent the last 2 days on the couch.
And here she is AFTER. Yep, she chose a PURPLE cast! Aunt Aimee was so happy about that.
(Can you believe that we forgot the camera - again?! You'd think we would have learned the first time! Jeremy and I both didn't expect them to put a cast on her. Thank you to Jeremy's blackberry for these 2 shots - they turned out better than I expected.)
Yesterday she thought this thing was pretty cool. That may be due to the fact that Jeremy and I were both a little over excited about the cast. We made a bigger deal out of it than we should have. Neither he or I have worn a cast nor have any of our children. So neither of us had ever even seen a cast put on before - we were almost giddy I think. We both marveled at the fact that it was our only girl that got the cast first - we had dibbs on Jackson to get the first broken bone in the family.
Today the reality is setting in a bit. This cast means: no more trampoline, no more gymnastics, easy-does-it going up and down the stairs, no bike rides, no tights to church, no jeans, plastic bag around her leg when she bathes (any suggestions on that one?), and she is about 3 1/2 inches taller on her right leg so she walks tippy toed wherever she goes. Walking is also interesting - she hobbles and limps/gimps around.
So please share any hints/tips/stragetgies for life with a cast. We need all the help we can get!

Oh, man! It's funny that you say you were not expecting your girl to break a bone first..I was sure it would have been Beau for us. The purple is great! As for bathing, we just made Isabelle hang her arm over the tub to keep it dry. I am not so sure about a leg....my niece was in a walking cast a couple years ago (she was 5 at the time..I think) and they just put a bag on her leg and made her shower...good luck with that one! Poor girl...just wait for the itchy, itchy, itchiness to begin.
i broke my toe in 4th grade and had a huge cast up to my knee. i just took showers with a bag. and don't let her scratch with things like pens because they will fall in and get stuck!!!
Okay, so I'm lame too because I would be a little giddy too. No broken bones for me or my husband or my kiddos (KNOCK ON WOOD-OUR INSURANCE SUCKS). Hang in there Lizzie...it's gonna be a long month.
I don't think I can offer much help on this one! I broke MY toe a couple of years ago. I had a walking cast too(black). After five days (and very little sleep) I couldn't STAND it anymore so I took a box knife, hack-saw and steak knife to it! Jarom came home right in the middle of me hacking away at the thing and thought I was going to kill myself! Since he didn't want that, he brought in the sawzall(sp?) and got the rest of it off. At the time, I wondered why I didn't think of the sawzall! I feel for poor Lizzie! Just make her keep it on, though, because my foot healed wrong and still hurts occasionally.
Hey Jen, I have never had a cast, but did have 2 knee surgeries and had to wear some extensive braces. I just being really frustrated at not being able to do the things that I loved or even the things I didn't like doing. Being unable to do what I once did was frustrating, but my mom taught me how to knit and croquet(sp?) which made it a lot better. Maybe you could find something new that she could learn love too?? Just a thought!!
This was Janet Andrews Wynn if you didn't know. Sorry, I have a blog too, but it's a private one so email me your email address if you would like an invite!! wynnjanet@gmail.com
I had a cast on my foot that went up to my knee about 1 1/2 yrs ago. I didn't take showers....I switched to baths for 6wks. I tied a bag around the cast, and kept my leg on the side of the tub.
